All routes set off from the Clarens Village Square, quickly leaving the bustle of the village behind as the trail heads west toward the mountains. Within moments, runners are immersed in the natural beauty of the Clarens Village Conservancy, where rugged sandstone formations, open grassland and winding mountain paths define the landscape.
The trail hugs the mountainside early on, offering sweeping views almost immediately. Routes weave through natural vegetation, cross seasonal spruits, and follow well-established single-track paths that showcase the area’s raw, unspoilt character. Expect a mix of runnable contour trails and more challenging sections, with rocky underfoot conditions that need a bit of focus.
As the course unfolds, runners pass landmarks such as the famous Titanic Rock and tranquil Kloof Dam, where still water reflects the surrounding beauty. Deeper into the conservancy, narrow kloofs and shaded forest pockets provide welcome contrast to the open slopes, while switchbacks and climbs lead onto ridgelines with panoramic views across Clarens, the surrounding farmland and distant mountain ranges.
The terrain is varied — steep ascents, rugged descents and exposed sections are balanced by flowing single-track and scenic plateaus. Throughout the route, the dramatic sandstone mountains that Clarens is known for rise around you, creating a sense of scale and wilderness that makes this trail experience truly special.
Whether winding through valleys, skirting dams, crossing spruits or climbing high above the village, the Clarens Village Conservancy delivers a trail-running journey rich in natural beauty, wildlife sightings and ever-changing scenery — a fitting backdrop for every distance of the Titanic Challenge Trail Run.

There are certain sections of the new 50km route which allow you to venture onto privately owned farm land which is usually off limits to the public. What this means is that these paths have not been built to the same high standard of those you’ll be running on within the Clarens Village Conservancy. So, while there will be markers in these sections, you will need to self-navigate a little and forge the best path for yourself through the veld. These new sections of route have been estimated to be a 8/10 for difficulty and technicality. And while all of that may sound a little daunting – we can promise that the views from the top are totally worth the climb!!
While there will be water points along the route, due to the challenging terrain and the early start time, the following are compulsory for the 50km:
- Hydration Pack
- Headlamp
- Extra Nutrition
- Charged Cellphone
- GPX Device
Mighty Maluti Route
Distance: 50 km
Follow the same route as the 35 km until just after the NOVON PROTECTA water point, where a marshal will guide you to turn right onto a single track toward Khubetswana, Clarens’ informal settlement.
Beyond Khubetswana, you’ll tackle a large sandstone section and follow the ridge past the solar panels. Cross the Clarens–Fouriesburg road, where a marshal will direct you onto the correct path. Continue along the single track for about 3 km, where the Protea Hotel team will be waiting with your next water point. Don’t forget to glance up to your right for a view of the iconic Mushroom Rock. Continue along the single track until you reach the Clarens–Fouriesburg road again.
From here, pass below the road and turn right to climb back up into the Rooiberg. This section is off-track but well-marked with arrows through cut grass. It’s technical and steep in places, so proceed with caution. Dangerous sections are clearly marked.
At the top, you’ll join a single track leading back toward Clarens. When reaching the Clarens Nature Reserve, a marshal who will direct you to a sharp left for a steep ascent to the summit of Rooiberg at 2,120 m. Running along the ridge, take in panoramic views over Lesotho, Golden Gate, Fouriesburg, and Clarens.
A marshal will then guide you on the descent back toward town. This is another technical and hazardous section, so be careful. About halfway down, you’ll join a single track that leads all the way back to town.
You’ll rejoin the 35 km route just before the NOVON PROTECTA water point, another well-deserved oasis, before turning back toward the dam wall. At the end of the dam wall, turn right to head back towards town.
Take the split for the 50 km a little further along (a marshal will assist) for your final climb. Once completed, follow Mallen Walk, cross the Parkrun Bridge, and tackle the final hill, affectionately known as Little Polly, to reach the finish line.
Relax, enjoy some food and drinks, soak up the atmosphere, and give yourself a well-earned pat on the back!

Titanic Challenge Route
Distance: 35 km
The journey begins on the village square, winding through Swartland before the route climbs toward the unmistakable Titanic Rock. Leaving the village behind, the trail enters natural mountain vegetation and ascends on flowing single-track, delivering sweeping views across Clarens and the surrounding countryside, along with your first hydration table and checkpoint.
From here, you pass through a gate and onto the ridge separating two valleys within Andes Game Farm. Keep an eye out for wildlife — buck, wildebeest, ostrich and zebra are often spotted along this section.
Descend carefully along the steep concrete path to the valley floor, then cross a dam wall with another dam on your left as the trail leads toward the farm homestead. At Andes Café, runners and spectators will find welcome refreshments and great race-day energy.
After the café, turn left toward the orchards and begin the climb back into the mountains. Surrounded by dramatic peaks, this scenic stretch offers a chance to regroup before the major ascent ahead. At the top, the Breytenbach Mafuso crew will be waiting with refreshments and a checkpoint — please remember to check in.
The route then follows the Sky Contour, a beautiful plateau where the trail hugs the mountain on mostly level terrain. Settle into your stride, enjoy the views, and check in at the next checkpoint.
As the trail descends, watch for the split where the 10 km route exits left, while the 21 km, 35 km and 50 km routes continue straight onto the Caracal Route. This scenic section winds into the back corner of the Conservancy before passing through a gate (mind the cattle grid) and descending via switchbacks and rocky outcrops to the valley floor.
Another checkpoint awaits before you turn right to climb Lung Buster Hill. After crossing the boardwalk, the trail opens to more views of Titanic Rock before cutting across the Scilla Trail, with eastern vistas stretching toward Lesotho. The NOVON PROTECTA water point follows before looping back to the dam wall.
Turn right at the end of the dam wall to head back toward town. Further along, take the marked split for the 35 km route, complete your final climb, then follow Mallen Walk, cross the Parkrun Bridge, and tackle “Little Polly” to the finish line.
Well done — you’ve conquered the Titanic Challenge 35 km! Relax, refuel and soak up the Clarens vibe — you’ve earned it.

Sky Contour Route

From the village square, the route weaves through the residential area of Swartland before setting its sights on the towering Titanic Rock — the landmark that inspired the race name. The trail soon leaves the streets behind, entering natural mountain vegetation as the climb up Titanic begins on flowing single-track. This opening ascent leads to the first hydration table and rewards runners with expansive views over Clarens and the surrounding landscape. You’ve now reached the plateau known as the Sky Contour — the perfect place to settle into your stride and soak in the scenery. The trail hugs the natural curve of the mountain, offering mostly level, runnable terrain and a welcome opportunity to find your rhythm.

Keep an eye out for a key split: the 10 km route veers left to descend off the mountain, while the 21 km route continues straight onto the Caracal Route.
From the far corner of the Conservancy, the trail passes through a gate — watch your step over the cattle grid — before winding down a series of switchbacks and rocky outcrops onto the valley floor. The terrain here is technical in places, so stay focused as you enjoy the wild beauty of the area.
The next checkpoint awaits in the valley. From here, turn right and begin the climb back up the mountain. This ascent, affectionately nicknamed Lung Buster Hill, quickly proves it has earned its name.
After crossing the boardwalk, the trail opens up to another spectacular view of Titanic Rock. Cutting across onto the Scilla Trail, runners are treated to eastern-facing views over the village and beyond, stretching all the way to the mountains of Lesotho. Along this section, you’ll find the NOVON PROTECTA water point before looping back toward the dam wall.
At the end of the dam wall, turn right and begin the journey back toward town. A short distance further on, take the split left for the 21 km route — clearly marked and marshalled — for your final climb.
Once you’ve completed the ascent along Mallen Walk, cross the Parkrun Bridge, tackle the final hill affectionately known as “Little Polly”, and make your way to the finish line.

At the bottom, turn left and follow the Spruit Walk back toward the village. When you encounter the 21 km, 35 km and 50 km markers branching left, go straight— the route is clearly marked and a friendly marshal will be on hand to guide you.
